Success Stories

A high school in central Kansas has seen its students’ average ACT scores rise significantly over the last 2 years. The principal attributes this increase in part to the school’s use of the Method Test Prep ACT platform. One student that the principal mentioned as an example improved her ACT Reading score alone 4 points. When he asked the student how she was able to improve her score that much, she responded “just from using Method Test Prep.” Because of her overall increase on the ACT, the scholarship she was offered jumped from $1,000 per year to $4,000 per year. This one family will save $12,000 over the course of 4 years in part due to the school’s adoption of the Method Test Prep platform.

This school provides all students with access to the platform and teachers at the school use Method Test Prep regularly, not only as ACT prep but also as a supplementary curriculum tool. The platform provides teachers and administrators with reports that show concepts where students are performing above and below average. The principal said he finds these reports more user-friendly and helpful than even the ones provided by ACT. At this year’s faculty meeting before the start of school, he shared these reports with the faculty so everyone was on the same page as far as concepts and areas to target this year for improvement. The principal intends to use the ACT as one his school’s primary yard sticks to determine how well his school is performing. He noted that because different state and national assessments have changed quite a bit, he preferred the relative stability of the ACT over the years.

Method Test Prep can be used as not only ACT prep and as a supplementary curriculum tool, but also as a tool for any students taking the PSAT. The program gives students a simple checklist to follow composed of 15 minute tasks. There is a checklist for the ACT and a checklist for the PSAT. The program provides students with audio lessons they can listen to from any device- computer, tablet, or phone. Practice questions offer video (as well as audio and written) explanations so students can watch a teacher explain the concepts and strategies anytime they are struggling and at their own pace. With the significant investment in Chromebooks and other devices across Kansas over the last three years, Method Test Prep is a perfect complement to help maximize return on this investment.

Problem: For either part of the SAT, the national average is around 500. Three years ago, only 25% of the students at Downtown Magnets HS, an inner-city Los Angeles high school, who took the SAT were able to achieve a score of 500 or better on the SAT Verbal section. For the SAT Math, the results were even worse; 19% of the students scored 500 or better. In addition, 34% of the students scored 300 or below on the SAT Verbal and 38% scored 300 or below on the SAT Math section.

Solution: The school decided to utilize Method Test Prep’s web-based SAT and ACT courses. Each student at Downtown Magnets HS was given his or her own account to use Method Test Prep (MTP) for the year. MTP’s SAT and ACT courses feature simple checklists for students to follow that break all of the test preparation in to 15 minute chucks of time so that students can sit for as little as 15 minutes and complete 1 or 2 tasks in the checklist. The tasks include short video explanations in which an experienced tutor explains the proper strategies for answering every type of SAT and ACT question. Also included are short audio lessons students can listen to as they read along and over 1,400 SAT and ACT questions to practice on.

Results Within two years, the percentage of students at Downtown Magnets HS that scored 500 or better on the SAT Math section jumped from 19% to 34% and for the SAT Verbal section, the percentage jumped from 25% to 33%. In addition, the percentage of students scoring 300 or below on the Verbal section decreased from 34% to 25% and for the SAT Math, the percentage decreased from 38% to 26%.

Endorsement: Lynda McGee, the College Counselor at Downtown Magnets, is thrilled with the success of her students and with the success of Method Test Prep: “There is no question that Method Test Prep’s courses help students raise their SAT and ACT scores. The courses are easy for my students to learn and use. Whenever I call or email Method Test Prep, I hear back from them right away and they are always willing to work with me on a personal level.”

Problem: At Brentwood High School, in New York, many students were doing no preparation before taking the SAT or ACT. The school does not have the same “college-going culture” as some of the higher socio-economic, adjacent districts. For many students, English is also a second language. Educators were trying to change ideas about the SAT and ACT and to show students that these tests can and should be prepared for. The reality at the school is that, on average, many students are only going to put in 3-5 hours of SAT or ACT prep total.

Solution: Brentwood High School was looking for a program that could make a significant difference even with a limited number of hours of student engagement. Brentwood High School decided to provide Method Test Prep’s SAT and ACT course to every student as part of an initiative to create a college-going culture at the school. Method Test Prep provided online webinars to the guidance, math, and English departments at the school so that teachers were aware of how easily Method Test Prep’s courses could be integrated into their classrooms. MTP’s SAT and ACT courses feature simple checklists for students to follow that break all of the test preparation down in to 15 minute chunks of time so that students can sit for as little as 15 minutes and complete 1 or 2 tasks in the checklist. The tasks include short video explanations in which an experienced tutor explains the proper strategies for answering every type of SAT and ACT question. Also included are short audio lessons that students can listen to as they read along and over 1,400 SAT and ACT questions to practice on.

Results: For students who had spent just 1 - 5 hours using Method Test Prep, the average score increase (as measured by Official SAT scores before and after using www.methodtestprep.com ) was 97.1 points. For students who spent 5 - 10 hours total, the average score increase was 116.5 points. One ESL student who loved the program and used it on her own at home was able to memorize 121 of the most common SAT vocabulary words in just 1 week!

Endorsement: Wayne Abenes, the Director of Guidance at Brentwood High School, is happy that the school is offering an SAT and ACT test preparation option to every student in the district, regardless of income. He continues to bring the message to his students that they can raise their SAT and ACT scores and achieve more highly by using www.methodtestprep.com.

Problem: Amityville High School, in Long Island in New York, in which the large majority of students come from low socio-economic and minority backgrounds, began using our courses five years ago. The year before, the average SAT math score for the graduating class was 473 and the average verbal score was 456.

Solution: Amityville High School decided to provide Method Test Prep’s SAT and ACT course to every student as part of an initiative to create a college-going culture at the school. Method Test Prep provided professional development to the guidance, math, and English departments at the school so that teachers were aware of how easily Method Test Prep’s courses could be integrated into their classrooms.

Results: For the first graduating class at Amityville High School that prepared with Method Test Prep, the average SAT math score was 503 and the average SAT reading score was 491. That represents an average overall SAT score increase of 65 points for the entire class! Statistically speaking, this was an incredible improvement. Many students who diligently used the program improved their scores from the PSAT to the SAT over 150 points. Just as significantly, scores at the school improved as an increasing number of students took the SAT and ACT.

Endorsement: Scott Andrews, the principal at Amityville High School, loves the personal attention that his school has received from Method Test Prep. He is happy with how engaged his students are when they are working on Method Test Prep. He has used Method Test Prep for years and will continue to encourage his students to take advantage of the preparation that Method Test Prep offers.
